Welcome to the Town of Buckeye, which is one of the fastest growing communities in Arizona and the nation. In fact, just last year Forbes Magazine named Buckeye as the second-fastest growing suburb in the country.

Founded in 1888 and incorporated eight decades ago as a 440-acre town, Buckeye has surged into the 21st century with a 600-square-mile planning area. There are currently 22 master planned communities, and almost 400,000 single-family units have been approved. In just six of those developments, more than a quarter-million homes are planned, as well as 71 elementary schools, 13 high schools and more than 4,500 areas of commercial, retail and employment development.

Population figures are beginning to reflect anticipated growth. The 2000 census had Buckeye’s population at 6,537. By 2005, that number had risen to more than 25,000, and is now closer to 40,000 residents.

But Buckeye isn’t just about new rooftops and new residents. Planning has begun on the 900-acre Buckeye Town Lake; the Dr. Saide Recreation Center is one of the busiest places in town, as are the many parks, trails and open spaces.Construction has begun on a new three-story town hall building in historic downtown Buckeye, work that has spurred additional redevelopment efforts in the area.

The growth has not caught us off guard. Our residents approved, with a record 82 percent vote total, the update to the General Plan, which will guide growth in the town for the next 10 years. We have a master plan that establishes guidelines for park and open spaces throughout Buckeye; we have joined with developers and the state of Arizona in determining the amount of water that lies beneath the Hassayampa River Basin west of the White Tank Mountains. And we are active participants in transportation studies aimed at determining the transportation corridors that will be required as the town grows.

And while some communities in Maricopa County have been criticized for destroying the desert with a sea of rooftops, we have annexed and will be preserving more than 125 square miles of federal Bureau of Land Management land – pristine Sonoran desert – for future generations.Whether you are surfing our user-friendly web pages, exploring the shops and restaurants around town or looking for a home in our family-friendly community, we’re happy to have you here.
